Saturday- Clement
Saturday, October 29th, 2005It is amazing that San Francisco has 3 Chinatown. I wonder how many chinatown we need to segregate all the chinese from the rest of American? Luckily, this is not the case here, people are pretty much living happily together. You see all kind of people, different colors, different religions, shopping and arguing prices at the same place.
I am blessed to live close to one of them. The old chinatown is located at downtown San Francisco on Grand, the new Chinatown is on Clement and…er..I am not sure about the next one
I am staying close to Clement st, about 4 blocks away. Today, I got myself a shopping cart which is a brilliant idea! No more big bagpack with water, milk, orange juice and chicken; I can put all the stuff I buy in the shopping cart and walk like an auntie! (When you reach certain age, you don’t care how you look anymore and I found that very true.)
There are lots of people today on Clement St, is Saturday, is huge! You need to stock up enough food for another week and prepare a big meal on Sunday! Here I am, walking along the street, comparing price and constantly counting my budget for the next week. Even my budget is tight, I really enjoy walking around and see those amazing stuff with unbeatable prices. You can find an apple for 70 cent in downtown and 49 cent per poud on Clement st, a greentea for 2 dollars in Walgreen and a pack of 6 greenteas for 1.99 on Clement. (ok, i am getting ‘aunty’ here again )
Most important of all, I love shopping in these local store; it reminds me of long long time ago…before Giant, before Carefore, before Makro. When you walk it to those stores, you notice that people recognize each other, the owner provide personal service to each customer, and they are not smiling! Ai, those good oldfashion days.
It is not all about the weather in California that attracted so many people to come here, it is the possibility. Just like the co-existance of the oldfashion and the morden, you don’t see this everywhere because those big monopolies are doing their very best to destroy that.
I guess I got everything I need, is time to head back and cook. Gosh, I miss my own cook!
